Pencils for sale!

This from Karen Coulson:

Hi Everyone

I have been sorting out and have a few bundles of coloured pencils I no longer want.
My son is going to Kenya in July to refurbish ( build) a school and each pupil has to raise £1650. as part of his fundraising effort we are clearing out and "car booting".
These pencils are far too good to car boot, and probably wouldnt be appreciated anyway.
So, i have...
33 assorted colours prismacolor pencils
48 assorted colours Karisma pencils
40 assorted colours Karisma aquarelle pencils
59 assorted colours Stabilo aquatico pencils
88 assorted colours Lyra Rembrandt pencils
97 assorted colours Lyra Rembrandt aquarell pencils.
these are all sets or part of sets I have bought to try over the years before settling on my favourites that I use now. Most are virtually full length, although afew are 3/4 size.

Any reasonable donation considered, i was thinking about 25p + per pencil?? plus cost of postage, would rather send by special delivery, so they are trackable.
So please get in touch via email if you are interested in any of them.
Thanks
Karen

Visitors Choice at Nuneaton

The most popular picture chosen by the visitors to this year's  UKCPS Open Exhibition at Nuneaton Art Gallery (it closed on 25th November) was this beautifully detailed drawing entitled "The Red Lion", by Berkshire artist, Morryce Maddams. Well done, Morryce!

Julie Ann Maguire - "Best of British"

The following press release comes from Michael Maguire regarding the latest achievements of his his wife Julie, to whom I offer sincerest congratulations!

New UKCPS member wins “Best of British” Competition

This highly successful jubilee year has inspired many talented individuals to
participate in art competitions and exhibitions across the length and breadth of the
country and Britain has been at the heart of their themes.

New UKCPS member, Julie Ann Maguire became a prizewinner in October 2012 when her cp rendering of “Jubilee in isolation” won first place in the leisure category of the Best of British
competition held by the Leisure Painter and The Artist magazines.

Julie, a part-time working mum and full-time housewife, is also a student of the
London Art College and has recently gained a distinction in their portraiture
certificate course. Her husband, Michael describes her as an “emerging talent”. He
says “She has the potential to achieve great things in the art world. She doesn’t
realise just how much talent she has. She’s been drawing since her late teens and
never had the opportunity or income to follow a traditional academic route. She’s
always put the family first so attending a local art college was never an option. LAC
provides an alternative in distance learning using the latest web technology for the
submission of assignments and is backed up by quality tutors and a thriving online
forum.” Julie has enrolled on the coloured pencil certificate course with London Art
College intending to make cp her preferred media as an artist.

Julie is looking forward to her membership with UKCPS. She has lots of ideas
and hopes to enter future exhibitions with the focus on gradually developing her work
towards signature status. Her reward for winning the Leisure Painter competition was
a commemorative wooden box of pencils, worth £500, provided by Derwent. This
takes pride of place in Julie’s household along with a canvas print of her artwork and
the winning image will also feature in the January issue of the magazine.

Award for Pencil Museum

The Cumberland Pencil Museum as been a regular venue for the UKCPS "World of Colour Pencils" exhibition held in the spring of each year, so it is nice to hear that they themselves have won a coveted award.  Congratulations from UKCPS!
The team at the Cumberland Pencil Museum are delighted to have received a Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Award from Visit Britain.  Commenting on the Award, Alex Farthing, the Museum Manager, said "I am delighted for the team that we have received this Award as it recognises all their hard work constantly improving the visitor experience and ensuring we offer outstanding Customer Service at all times. The team always go that extra mile for our customers and this is reflected in some of the lovely comments we have received in our Visitors Book and on our feedback forms.  Also, this year  we have  further enhanced the visitor experience with the addition of an interactive video in our WW2 exhibition and a dressing up area for children which all help to bring our stories to life".
The Pencil Museum was only awarded the Quality Rose marquee after it had been rigorously mystery shopped by one of Visit Britain’s independent assessors.

Judith Crown has sent in these links to competitions:

http://www.painters-online.co.uk/open/?page=portlympnephotos this is the one that will be starting on November 1st and is obviously a lot to do with certain zoo/wildlife animals. If you like drawing elephants, giraffes etc, look at the present link now and follow up in November.

http://www.stcuthbertsmill.com/competition/ is a postcard competition that has a link from Painters-online. I have got a postcard via S.A.E. and am using coloured pencil. It is not the best tooth, but is o.k. for cp and is soft and smooth for fine details. This has plenty of time as it closes on December 1st.

Good luck

AGM Rogues Gallery

The Chair in full flow!
The UKCPS is such a scattered group of enthusiasts that few are able to attend the AGM unless it is actually held within their region of the UK.

Consequently, many members would not recognise an Exec Committee member even if they fell over one!

Here then, are those Exec members who faced the members present at the AGM in Nuneaton on 6th October last:

(L to Rt) Pauline Longley [Local Groups], Malcolm Cudmore [Editor- Talking Point], Will Johnson [Secretary & Membership], Barbara Murray [Chair], Liz Ridley [Treasurer & Website], Pat Heffer [President].  (I'm missing 'cos I'm behind the camera!).

Missing Exec members are: Bev Lewis [Newsletter & publicity design], Sarah Longrigg [Yahoo Groups Forum].

Be advised that, in the course of the next year, some of the Exec members are liable to undertake different functions from those listed.  (follow this Blog or read about it in Talking Point or the Newsletter!)

Members present - too many to name!
And here are those members who managed to attend!

11th OPEN EXHIBITION

I thought readers might like to read a comment sent by Graham Brace, one of the three independant judges who chose the entries for this year's exhibition :

"What a treat in Nuneaton on Saturday night! Three gallery rooms filled with a stunning array of work...not to mention a sumptuous buffet!

First of all I would like to congratulate all concerned in bringing this exhibition to fruition and to the gallery staff in hanging it so superbly.

As one of the three initial judges, seeing all the entries originally online, on-screen was impressive enough...but there is no substitute for seeing them 'in the flesh', mounted and framed. It added another dimension and I was 'blown away' by the overall high standard of draughtsmanship, composition and sheer technical skill demonstrated in the use of the medium. This exhibition is a superb demonstration of how far CP art has come and no-one in their right mind (in the art 'establishment') on seeing this could possibly dismiss the CP medium as inconsequential, infantile, inferior or unacceptable. This show is a triumph!"

2013 -- Early warning!!

The 2012 Exhibtion hasn't opened yet [SEE MY TWO PREVIOUS POSTS FOR NEWS], but members (and other potential exhibitiors!) need to be aware of the following:

The UKCP Open International Exhibition 2013 is being held at Patchings Art Centre, Nottingham, for a 5 week period from the 31st August to 6th October 2013. This is earlier than usual due to limited availability, so please bear in mind that we will be asking for your entry forms earlier too.

As a result we have also brought the members Keswick 'World of Colour Pencils' exhibition forward by a month to April. Hoping this gives you plenty of time to produce some more stunning work.

Assistant Exhibitions Co-ordinator

A VERY BIG P.S.
Also, if there is anyone living in the Nottingham area that would like to help with the Patchings exhibition we would be delighted to hear from you. You will not be expected to do this alone but would be be part of an exhibition team.

Nuneaton - Evening parking

Further to my earlier post regarding the AGM, etc. at the Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery.

The Ropewalk car park closes at 7pm, so is not suitable for those attending the  exhibition Preview Night from 6.30 onwards.

With regards to parking near to the  Art Gallery for the Preview Night, the closest two options are the car park outside the museum itself the address for which is, Riversley Park, Coton Road, Nuneaton, CV11 5TU. Please note there are limited spaces available at this parking site. (only 20 , I think!)

The alternative option is to park at the Riverside car park located just behind the Nuneaton Town Hall, Coton Road, Nuneaton, CV11 5AA. which [I think] is free as well in the evenings!

Monday 1 October 2012

AGM Reminder

This is just a quick note to remind all UKCPS members that the society Annual General Meeting takes place at the Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery, Riversley Park, Coton Road, Nuneaton, CV11 5TU on this coming Saturday, 6th October 2012, from 11.30.

The meeting will be followed by a society buffet lunch (please contact Barbara Murray at: chair@ukcps.co.uk to book a place).

It is also the opening day of the UKCPS Open International Exhibition (official preview that night from 6.30 onwards), so AGM attendees will be able to view all the wonderful works submitted by members.

There is limited car parking at the Musuem, but there is a large multi-storey across the road (the Ropewalk Shopping Centre) - note that it closes at 7pm according to the website!

Some of the people who make the society HAPPEN! - come and say hello!
I look forward to meeting people!  Please take the opportunity to introduce yourself  -  to me - and to other members of the society!

Art Materials Live - Birnmingham NEC

This has come from Will Johnson, Secretary to the society:--

Dear Member,

As you may already know, the UKCPS runs a stand at the NEC each year in
the Art Materials Live show held in November. We have several people
demonstrating their Coloured Pencil skills, and we try to sell a few
items to make a bit of money for the society, including new memberships.
It is a great way to meet old friends and to make new ones. If you have
been before you will know we used to have a hands on area for people to
try out coloured pencils, however the organisers have asked us not to
run the participation section of the stand this year.

I am writing to ask if you could volunteer some of your time to
help. The show runs from Thursday 8th November to Sunday 11th November
from 9:30 until 5:30 (5:00 on Sunday). A free entry pass will be
available for all volunteers that enables entry not only to Art
Materials Live, but also to the sister shows “Crafts For Christmas “and
“Hobbycrafts”.

If you could see your way clear to helping, or think you might be able
to help, please let me know by emailling me at: secretary@ukcps.co.uk and I will let you
have more details.
Sincerely

Will Johnson

Robin Borrett - Local Group picture

Robin Borrett's Local group in East Leake have yet again produced a composite picture in aid of charity.  "Quorn and Woodhouse Station" was completed by his  Monday am and the Wednesday pm colour pencil groups.                                               The station is part of the Great Central Railway near Loughborough. The Great Central is a preserved line running from Loughborough to North Leicester. Plans are already underway to connect to Ruddington nr Nottingham, this means that trains will again run through East Leake.

Robin has said:

"We shall be giving the picture to the railway. There are 30 separate pieces making up a 1.3m x 1m finished artwork. Everyone found this subject a little different to the old masters that we had tackled before. As in previous years the picture was displayed at our annual exhibition, raising funds for Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes."

UKCPS Exhibition - Post 3

The successful artists for the exhibition will shortly be receiving the details of how to arrange for delivery of  their works to the Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery for the afternoon of Monday 1st October (hand-in day!), and the arrangements for removal of unsold works afterwards.

Be aware that the exhibition will be held in two seperate rooms of the gallery - and each has its own requirements for hanging! - so read the instructions carefully!!

However, - if you wish to view the arrangements online then you can download .pdf versions of the instructions via the UKCPS website: www.ukcps.co.uk

Members should also note that the Society AGM is being held in the Gallery at 11.30 am on 6th October 2012 (the opening day of the exhibition) and will be followed by a members buffet lunch. UKCPS Open Exhibition - Post 2

Pauline Longley, who is organising the volunteers for the exhibition, has asked me to post an urgent request for volunteer demonstrators (2 or 3 required) for  2nd & 3rd November, plus we need help  for the 'Have -a - Go' table on  the exhibition opening day (6th October) and other days.  You don't need a lot of experience for the 'Have-a-Go' -- just a freindly attitude and ready smile to encourage visitors to possibly join the society.  Even a couple of hours as a volunteer will allow others to take a break!

Also - a reminder that the society's AGM takes place at the gallery from 11.30 am on 6th October, and is followed by a buffet lunch to which members are invited.  Please attend the AGM if you can as, amongst other important issues, we need to re-organise the current Executive Committee, and the input of members is important!

Please contact Pauline at: pauline@paulinelongley.co.uk

Isobel Buckley - Ken Bromley Winner!!

Many congrats to UKCPS member, Isobel Buckley for winning this year's Ken Bromley Cover Picture Competition.

Isobel's picture of a sleeping Lion will appear on the new catalogue for Ken Bromley Art materials.

Isobel is quoted:
"I have always had a passion for art since I was a little girl and I was very fortunate to have parents who encouraged me with this. Even as a child I loved painting and drawing and always liked producing pictures which captured detail. I followed this love of art to University where I studied Fine Art with American Studies. After University I spent a few years concentrating on studying to become a teacher and for a Master of Arts in Education. It was then my Mum who encouraged me back into art and thanks to her I found I had a passion for wildlife and animal art. It began when she introduced me to an artist called Vic Bearcroft who I found inspirational. After attending a workshop he was running I was hooked on drawing animals and pastels. It was actually during this workshop held at the Wildlife Heritage Foundation in Kent that I had an opportunity to look around and take photographs of the big cats there. The piece ‘Sleeping Lion’ was actually inspired from one of the photographs I took there after watching the lions devour their lunch and then turn very sleepy.
Shortly after this I decided to explore some other mediums and discovered coloured pencils, and I haven’t looked back! While I have different brands of coloured pencils, my absolute favourites are Prismacolour which I find produce a lovely buttery consistency. I spend many hours building up layers of colours to produce pictures which contain those details which I find myself compelled to achieve. I find they are a wonderful medium for drawing animals, and a lot of people are amazed to find out that coloured pencils can achieve such alluring effects.
While I spend a lot of my time teaching and with my family, I spend a vast amount of my spare time drawing and painting. I have recently updated my website www.izzysart.co.uk and I have created a Facebook page www.facebook.com/izzysart1. I am currently in the process of producing my first set of prints to sell and other examples of my artwork can be found on these pages. I am also planning to continue to produce lots more pictures of animals as beautiful as the lion in the future.
I consider myself very lucky to be blessed with such a wonderful passion, and I’m honestly stunned and over the moon that so many people voted for my picture, so a very big thank you to them."

NEWA - Nat. Exhibition of Wildlife Art

I made a quick visit to the NEWA exhibition at the Gordale Garden Centre, here on the Wirral, today.
It is good to see so many CP works having been accepted on show, with many of them by UKCPS members.

Congratulations then to members Alan Jones, Brian Ainsworth, Jo Goudie, Karen Coulson, David Pritchard, and Valerie Briggs.  Victoria Parsons had a 'colour crayon' picture listed in the catalogue, but that might have been CP in another name?

Congrats also to June Lesley Fox - but hers were all watercolours (nice ones though!)

The NEWA exhibition is one of the top wildlife exhibitions in the country with over 400 pictures in all media.  Well worth a visit if you can get to it before the close on Sunday next, 29th July.  Open 09.00 to 18.00, except Sunday closing at 17.00.

Christ Church Arts Festival (and a holiday for me!)

If anyone is in the Birkenhead area this Saturday (14th), then I'd be pleased to meet you at the Arts Festival at Christ Church Hall in Bessborough Road, Oxton, Wirral.

One of a number of artists demonstrating, I will be doing a CP drawing from 1pm to 4pm.  The festival runs from Friday to Sunday, and includes an art exhibition by local artists, music, and poetry readings, especially with extracts from the works of Wilfred Owen who was a choirboy at Christ Church, Oxton, and whose father was a church warden.

From the Sunday onwards, I will be holidaying on the fair isle of Anglesey (Ynys Mon) for a week, so there will be no blog updates during that period  -  so if you have any news/views/adverts -- send them now so that I can get them posted.   (If anyone else is visiting Anglesey at the same time - let me know and we'll meet for coffee!)

Me - for a change

'Oranges'
Just to add to the acceptance of CP works in galleries -

I've just received news in the midday post that my picture 'Oranges' has been accepted for display at the Wirral Summer Art Exhibition 2012, to be held at the Williamson Museum & Art Gallery, Birkenhead, from 30th June to 9th September.

It was completed using Derwent Coloursoft on Daler-Rowney Extra Smooth Cartridge paper.

Alan Jones @ Patchings

'Me Strong'
Congratulations also go to Alan Jones whose picture  of a baby gorilla has also been accepted at Patchings!  Alan is having a good year!

"Just thought I'd let you know my drawing of the baby gorilla
("Me Strong") has been accepted into the Patchings Art Festival! It was drawn with Derwent Studio & Coloursoft Pencils onto A3 cartridge. I am over the moon it has been accepted and was so excited I delivered it by hand!"

Isn't it good to see CP work getting into the popular exhibitions!

Monday 4 June 2012

Sandra Dewsberry @ Patchings

'Stanage Edge - Derbyshire'
Congratulations to UKCPS member, Sandra Dewsberry, whose CP work entitled 'Stanage Edge' [See right] has been accepted for display at the 'Artist' and 'Leisure Painter' Patchings 2012 Exhibition.
Sandra, who is a member of Robin Borrett's East Leake local group, has commented:

"I'm very much an amateur, consider myself a beginner, and haven't done many pictures at all yet. I usually feel I haven't got a clue what I'm doing and the end result seems to come from nowhere, but I'm learning with each one and my desire to produce bright, colourful and detailed work is what motivates me to 'have a go'.

What I have done has been so well received it's made me sit up and think maybe I'm capable of more than I realise, and I'm chuffed to bits with people's responses to my work. I entered the competition just to see what (if anything) would happen really. It's the first one I've entered and I did it because I enjoy going to the Patchings Art Festival and had this mad dream that it would be amazing to actually - one day - have a picture on display there.  The picture is worked in Prismacolor pencils on Bristol Board."

Thursday 31 May 2012

Karen Coulson @ Patchings

The Patchings Festival is on from 14th - 17th June, and is a favourite attraction for artists of all media and levels.

One of this year's added 'attractions' will be UKCPS Silver Member, Karen Coulson, who will be there for the four days demonstrating the recently introduced Derwent Artbar.

Karen wil be found either on the Derwent Stand or on the Paper House Stand.

Bev Lewis - New Derwent Paper

Congratulations to UKCPS Signature member, Bev Lewis, whose lovely picture of a Rhinoceros features on the front covers of the pads of  Derwent's newly launched range of watercolour papers.

Derwent have launched the paper as follows:-

Derwent launch new Watercolour Paper

Derwent’s new beautifully smooth natural wove Watercolour Paper has been especially developed for use with water-soluble pencils, but it can also team up with all types of water-soluble media; particularly Derwent’s new Artbar range and their Inktense Blocks.

The superior smooth texture of the new Derwent Watercolour Paper makes it incredibly versatile;  it enhances your pencil work whether wet or dry, and is ideal for intricate watercolour paintings as well as even washes of colour, or a combination of the two!

The heavy weight 300gsm paper responds well to washes but Derwent recommend that the paper is stretched prior to use if a particularly large area is to be covered or a heavy wash used.

The new Watercolour Paper is available in pads in the most popular sizes ranging from A2 to A5. Each pad contains 12 sheets of 300gsm, white, acid free watercolour paper and features a watercolour drawing of a Rhino by animal artist Bev Lewis (UKCPS) on the cover. Prices start at £5.99 for an A5 pad ranging to £22.99 for A2.

For more information on Derwent’s new Watercolour Paper and their range of water-soluble drawing media visit www.pencils.co.uk

We are therefore seeking volunteers amongst the membership who would be able to give up some of their spare time either to demonstrate CP techniques (and you get to show off your handiwork!), or to assist with have-a-go sessions.

UKCPS 11th Open Exhibition - call for entries

[editor's note:  My thanks to Maria Villioti for pointing out my silly error in originally numbering the exhibition as the 12th!!]

The 'Call for Entries' for the UKCPS 11th Open International Exhibition has been published and a copy is included in the new edition of 'Talking Point', (which all members should be receiving even as I write).  The closing date for entries is 7th July 2012.

The exhibition is open to all colour [or color!  :-)]  pencil artists, so non-members from the UK and abroad can obtain the document as a .pdf file by visiting the UKCPS website (www.ukcps.co.uk), and then clicking on the 'Call For Entries' link in the right hand column of the home page.  Please read the conditions of entry carefully - the Society has set out its definition as to what is acceptable for exhibition as 'pure colour pencil', and what is defined as 'mixed media'.

This year's exhibition is being held at the Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery, Riversley Park, Coton Road, Nuneaton, CV11 5TU, between 6th October to 25th November 2012.

John Hayes - In memorium

It was great sadness that we recently heard of the death of UKCPS member, John Hayes.  John had been a member since December 2006, and was particularly noted for his fine drawings of classic, vintage, and modern sports cars.   His skill in this subject had earned him the Associate membership of the Guild of Motoring Artists.  However, John's subjects covered a wide area, and in recent times he had produced some lovely pictures of preserved steam engines, of which 'The Mallard' [shown right] is one.
For the time being, you can still view John's website featuring many examples of his work via: http://1-john-hayes.artistwebsites.com/index.html.
John's death is a sad loss to the society, and to the art world as a whole.  We extend our deepest sympathy to his family at this time.
