Coloured Pencil Experience Days

UKCPS artist Pauline Longley has been in touch to report that her CPE (Coloured Pencil Experience) day on 12 March is now fully booked, but there are still places available for the Collerton St Mary event in Devon on 26 March, and for the Holt, Wimborne, event in Dorset on 16 April. All the CPE events run from 10.am til 4pm.
A further event is planned for Saturday 4th September, to be held at the Mark Village Hall, Vale Road, Mark, Somerset, TA9 4NY. This event will also act as a collection point for UKCPS artists paintings which have been accepted into the UKCPS International Exhibition opening in Westminster Hall, London shortly after.
These one day events are good value for money (£10 UKCPS members, £15 non-members), especially if you've never tried coloured pencils as an art medium. All levels of experience are welcome, - just bring your own pencils, paper, and any reference photographs you wish to use.

NOTE FOR UKCPS MEMBERS: Contact Pauline if you would like assistance in running similar events in your area.
Application forms and further information can be obtained from Pauline Longley:
Telephone: 07813 332914 or Email: pauline@paulinelongley.co.uk
For information about Pauline herself - visit her Members Blog on this page, or view her Gallery on the Members Gallery page of the UKCPS website - http://www.ukcps.co.uk/

Bernard Aime Poulin - Awarded

Bernard Poulin, the noted Canadian artist and long time friend and supporter of UKCPS, has been granted international recognition by the award of the "Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Pleiade" (translated as: Knight of the Pleiade) from 21 March 2011, and in recognition of his remarkable contribution to Canada's cultural reputation.

The Order of the Pleiade was established in 1976 by the 'Parliamentary Assembly of Francophonie', an institution representing over 40 French-speaking countries and regions throughout the world. The award is made for prominant contributions to the Assembly's ideals of development, co-operation, and friendship.
Bernard, amongst other things, is a wonderful portrait artist, and I recommend a visit to his website; www.poulinstudios.com

CHAT ROOM MEETINGS

(see my post of 14 February)
The 7 pm [gmt] meeting in the Forum chatroom seems to have developed into regular appointment, with Judith Crown, Pauline Longley, and Sarah Longrigg, being frequent 'chatters' between 7 and 7.30 pm. (and I pop-in when I can!). Don't worry if you've never used a chatroom before - most of us are beginners and only starting to learn the ropes. Spelling is definately not important!

Derwent 'Inktense Blocks'

The new Inktense Blocks (see the Blog entry for 12 February) are under discussion by the UKCPS Executive as they try to decide whether they should be defined as a 'coloured pencil' - given that they consist of the same Inktence pigment, but shaped in a pastel-like block without any wooden surround.

What do readers think?

Chat Room meeting!

For UKCPS members:
A reminder that Forum members will be meeting in the chat room tonight at 7pm GMT.

The chatrom is a good resource if you need instant advice on CP matters - or even if you just want to chat about the weather!!

The Forum (and hence the chatroom) is open to all UKCPS members, but you have to register with your name and membership number via the UKCPS website: www.ukcps.co.uk (click on Yahoo Forum).

Derwent News

Derwent Pencils are a valued sponsor to UKCPS, so I make no apologies for recommending a visit to their website: www.pencils.co.uk. In particular, it's well worth a look at their own blog : http://www.lovepencils.co.uk , where there is a good review of their new Inktense Blocks - solid blocks of water-soluable Inktense pigment in similar size to a pastel, and there is also a colouring Logo competition for you to enter!

If you are new to Derwent products, then click on the 'Hints & Tips' tag on the homepage for downloadable PDF files on various uses of their pencils, or similarly, click on the 'Contact Us' tag, and then click on the link to Youtube for videos of their products in use.

The Coloured Pencil Experience!

Because of the success of previous 'Coloured Pencil Experience' workshops in Somerset, Pauline Longley is now taking bookings for three more workshops in the South West (She's a glutton for punishment!).

1) Somerset: 12 March at Mark, near Burnham-on-Sea, with Bev Lewis & Pauline. Only 4 places left.

2) Devon: 26 March at Collerton St Mary, Paignton, with Juliet Eden, Ann Roberts, & Pauline. 9 places left.

3) Dorset: 16 April at Holt, Wimborne, with Karen Coulson & Pauline. 12 places left.

These workshops are an ideal chance to indulge in a day with 'coloured pencils', especially if you've never tried them before (you don't have to be a member of UKCPS to take part!). The worshop includes demos, slide shows, helpful critiques, step-by-step drawing, and much more.

UKCPS members: £10, non-members: £15

Email Pauline at: pauline@paulinelongley.co.uk for more information and application forms.

Would you be interested in attending a similar workshop in your area? Contact Pauline for further information.

More Members Blogs........

Lesley Crawford, a UKCPS founder member, and former editor of the society's magazine 'Talking Point', also has a blog. Scroll down the page and take a look at Gaia Art in the members blogs list.

More of Lesley's artwork can be viewed in the Members Gallery on the UKCPS website.

Irina Garmashova

Congrats to UKCPS member, Irina Garmashova, on a very nice article on colour pencil techniques in the March issue of Leisure Painter!

Irina uses a picture of her cat for the step-by-step demonstration, and the article will be of particuar interest to those thinking of using the 'Zest-it' solvent in their work. You can view more of Irina's work in the Members Gallery at the UKCPS website.

Incidently, the March issue also contains the call for entries to this year's Patchings art competition.

UKCPS Forum Chatroom

UKCPS members who have joined the Yahoo Forum now have access to a dedicated 'chatroom' for live messaging. At present there are no set times for entering the room, so members will have to take pot-luck to see if other members are online, or send an advance message via the Forum to arrange mutual visiting times with fellow members.

UKCPS members who wish to join the Forum (and thereafter the chatroom) should go to the UKCPS home page and click on the link to Yahoo Forum, then sign on with your membership number to join the Forum. To enter the 'chatroom', go to the Forum page and click on the link = 'Chat'.
