Derwent - Artists Pencils Competition

Derwent Artists pencils were the first colour pencil ever to be developed by Derwent and they are still one of the most popular in the market. In 2010 Derwent intends to unveil a new tin design for Artists Pencils, and have launched a national competition in search of an image to appear on the new tins.

The traditional subject for Artists Pencils that has appeared on the front of the packs since their launch in 1938 has always been Ashness Bridge, near Keswick in the Lake District.

Keeping with tradition, the challenge for this competition is to draw Ashness Bridge with Derwent Artists Pencils.  Derwent want the image to be very eye-catching, dynamic and to really show off the Artists pencils range.

Entries must be
  • in portrait format,
  • drawn with Derwent Artists Pencils
  • at least A4 in size.
  • received by the closing date of January 31st 2010.
Rules:
1. All work must be executed in Derwent Artists Pencils
2. Minimum size for entries: A4 (210mm x 297mm)
3. Entries must be submitted unframed and protected in a stiffened envelope
4. The completed entry form must be affixed securely to the back of your work.
5. If you want your drawing returned, you must enclose the correct postage and a reply label. Entries not complying with this rule will not be returned.
6. Every care will be taken of entries, but the organisers cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage during transit, incoming or outgoing, while on the  organiser’s premises or while being judged or exhibited.
7. The winning prize is your image appearing on the iconic tin, and a finished tin of Artist Pencils with your image on the front. No financial alternative will be offered.
8. Derwent reserve the right to commission an artist if a suitable image is not found from the competition.
9. In entering your work you are agreeing to the use of your image by Derwent, in any format and publication.

I'm sorry to put a dampener on this, I'm all for art competitions per se. However, it seems to me that by choosing this particular subject for artists to depict, ie. a 'local' scene, Derwent are excluding many potential entrants. Unless we live in the vicinity, or have visited this particular area, coloured pencil artists would have to resort to copying someone else's photo - surely not something Derwent would condone.

I'm sure there are many artists out there all over the British Isles, and indeed the world, who use D. Artists pencils who would have loved to take part in this competition. What a pity that Derwent, a company producing pencils for the international market, have excluded so many of them.

Thanks for the comment Janet and you raise a significant issue.

I'll contact the people at Derwent and ask if someone can comment in this thread by way of a response

Thanks for your comment Janet. I work in the Marketing department for Derwent and so wanted to respond to you.

Of course it would never be our intention to exclude anyone. Even though we are an international company and are very proud of this, our heritage is very important to us. We are lucky to have been able to remain in the UK and continue to manufacture pencils here, where it all started many years ago, while other manufacturers have had to move overseas.

There are a lot of ranges under the Derwent 'umbrella' each with its own unique and appealing drawing on the front of the packaging. Whilst looking at all our ranges and partaking in extensive market research we took the decision to keep the image of Ashness Bridge on the front of the Artists Pencils packaging as it has worked so well for us for many years now. Artists will be seeing a lot of changes across the Derwent ranges which started from the beginning of last year and will continue for a few more years, we hope that everyone likes the new designs and what we have done to 'refresh' our brand.

The Marketing department jumped at the idea of running a competition and for the winner to have their drawing on the front of the tin, something which we have never done before and which is now made a lot easier with the social media available now.

We will be posting a reference picture of Ashness Bridge on flickr shortly for Artists to use.

Many thanks
Emma

Many thanks Emma for your prompt response. :)

I guess all we need to do now is watch out for the image which is going to be posted on Flickr. I'll update this post when it is posted.
