  • show the wide range of abilities and ways of using coloured pencils that exist within the Society, so is open to UKCPS members only.
  • cater for artists who combine coloured pencils with other media.
Beginners are specifically encouraged to enter and there is an award specifically for this group.

Awards

Artists whose work is accepted into the exhibition are eligible for consideration for the following awards. Awards are judged by Derwent after the pictures are hung.

How to apply

This is a members only exhibition with entry being free to all full members. Only one entry per member is permitted. Pictures must not have been hung at any previous UKCPS Exhibitions.

part of the 2008 Exhibition

The available hanging space in the Cumberland Pencil Museum is restricted and only 24 pictures can be accommodated. Consequently the size of picture which can be submitted for this exhibition is also restricted. Pictures should not exceed 80cm, measured to the outside of the frame either horizontally or vertically.

The exhibition is NOT juried.

The way it works is as follows:

  • the first 24 pictures to apply after 30 March 2009 will be accepted, based on the date postmark.
  • As indicated above the March issue of Talking Point will include entry forms. This can also be downloaded from the relevant website page at the same time (first week of March).
  • The closing date for entries will be 16 April 2009.
  • Those who enter a work will be contacted and advised whether or not you have been successful by 30 April 2009.
Note that successful artists will be required to present their framed picture to ‘The Cumberland Pencil Museum’ before 3-00 pm on Saturday 30 May 2009 ready for hanging. UKPCS aims to arrange a network of members to deliver pictures. Pictures may alternatively be posted or sent by carrier directly to Derwent in Keswick (address details will be advised later). Pictures must be collected by the artist or his or her agent on Sunday 28 June 2009.

Conditions of Entry

The Society wishes to see work submitted that is essentially the original work of the submitting artist from concept, through design, to completion. In this way the exhibition will clearly demonstrate the compositional and drawing skills of all the artists, as well as their ability
to use colour from a pencil source.

Members who are interested are advised to read the Call for Entries carefully, paying particular attention to what it says in the "What is eligible work?" section and noting what is ineligible.

Who's in the "Explore This" exhibition?

As previously announced, as from 2009, CPSA's Explore This! exhibition is to be annual and online only with all entries being digital images. This meant that the exhibition became a much more affordable proposition to enter for anybody previously concerned about the cost of shipping work over to the USA and back.

The Exhibition Artwork will go online and the Award Winners will be announced on February 1, 2009.

In the meantime you can check out whether you can recognise any names of UKCPS members in the listing of accepted entries which was published this week.

The unique feature of Explore This! is that all entries must have some element which breaks the rules of the CPSA International Exhibition

Finally, CPSA have also announced that the 2010 CPSA Convention will be in Santa Clara County in California - just south of San Francisco. Further details are available on the CPSA blog (see below).

The Japan Colored Pencil Society

Late last year, UKCPS received news from Takako Ikuta in Japan. Some of you may recall Bob Ebdon writing about her in his sign-off post back in September 2008.
....finally - back to our very first exhibition. This took place at Patchings Farm in 2001, and our very first AGM was held there on a Saturday. The following day I got a call from Patchings - a lady had turned up for the AGM, she had come a long way, and would I like to meet her. It turned out she had come a VERY long way - it was Takako Ikuta, from Japan. I was delighted to meet her, brought her home for tea, and have kept in touch ever since. I was very excited to get an e-mail from her just this week to announce that she has formed the Japan Colored Pencil Society. Now look what we done!
  • In September 2008, Takako founded the Japan Colored Pencil Society. It has 22 members.
  • The society now has a website - the address is http://j-cps.org.
  • JCPS also held its first exhibition in 2008 and exhibited the works of all those who applied. You can see a gallery of the first exhibition on the website and you can see photographs of them hung here.
  • JCPS are also planning to hold a second exhibition in November 2009.
It's very interesting to note that some of the artwork is using coloured pencil at the same time as adopting the subject matter and compositional style of traditional Japanese artwork of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

About Takako Ikuta

Takako Ikuta UKCPS CPSA is a coloured pencil artist and author who has exhibited with both UKCPS and CPSA, was awarded signature status with both societies in 2004 and 2005 respectively and has won prizes and commendations at the annual exhibitions of both societies.

Which I think I'm right in saying makes her unique in the world!

A new website for a new year

Welcome to the new look website!

Check out the UKCPS website! It has changed its webmaster and where it is hosted and now has been relaunched with a new look.

As all UKCPS members will know Bob Ebdon, the Founder of UKCPS, retired as its webmaster in September 2008. UKCPS has been fortunate to recruit Liz Ridley to be its new webmaster.

As the website had to move hosts, Liz has taken the opportunity to relaunch the UKCPS website and it now has a whole new look - you can get a taster with the image at the top and to see more click this link to visit the new UKCPS website.

Please note

If you have any pages bookmarked on your computer you might want to note that the URLs of all the regular pages have changed. Any bookmarks that you have will now go to a 404 page which has a link to the URL of the new website http://www.ukcps.co.uk/index.html
  • Why don't you check your bookmarks and see if you need to change them?
  • Note that all the hyperlinks to the website which you can find the right hand column on this blog now link to the new website pages.
Liz has issued an invite to all visitors to have a good look around. I'm sure she would appreciate feedback and a note of any queries you may have. You can either leave her a comment on this blog or contact her - and you can find out how to do that on the 'Contact Us' page on the new website.

Most of the changeover has been completed. However, some sections are still under construction. These should be clearly marked and will be re-appearing during the next few weeks. These include the links page and links to all the coloured pencil information which has been developed over the years - no small undertaking! The current plan is that all the changes will have been completed by the end of January.

Finally UKCPS News would like to wish a Happy New Year to all its readers.
